Change Your Words. Change Your Life!

Cheryl MelodyDear AHHmazing Ones, I live by my motto, “Change your words. Change your life.” The words we choose to say and think matter. A lot. If we become more mindful of our words and thoughts, it will help change patterns of behaviors that no longer serve us.

When you write your affirmations, make sure the words are positive and written in the present tense. (As if they are already happening and true). Say them out loud, whisper them, write them down on post-it notes, sing them, think them, and most of all, live them.

I teach “Words Matter” workshops, have created many power sentences that work for me, and this is one of my favorites ...

“I speak my truth with clarity, strength and love.”

How did it become my favorite? While my mom was in the hospital, serious mistakes were being made. When I spoke to the doctor-in-charge, I wanted to be careful about my choice of words, and I wanted to be careful about the tone in my voice. I didn’t want to sound too nice and wimpy, and I didn’t want to sound too brash and angry.

I delivered my words with a tone and intention that came from my power belly, and I delivered my words with a tone and intention that came from my heart chakra.

The overworked doctor I had to speak with had a reputation for being brash, uncaring, and authoritarian. but for some reason, after he listened to my words and the way in which they were said, he nodded in agreement. He even managed to smile at me.

Hmm. What just happened? Despite the nurse’s warning to me of the contrary, speaking up to him was a piece of cake. Was the positive result just a lucky break? What if it hadn’t worked out? How would I have handled myself if he ignored me? Disrespected me? Walked away? Told me off?

Life Wisdom: Even if we communicate respectfully, it doesn’t always work, does it? There are no guarantees that we’ll receive a positive response in return. That’s life in real time.

When we plan what we’re going to say and practice our speech in the mirror, it works every time. In reality, our well-designed and well-intentioned communication may or may not work.

Even though there are no guarantees of a successful outcome, here are the most useful communication tips that often work for me, and maybe they’ll work for you, too …

Listen to the other person with an open heart. While you continue to stand in the backbone of your truth, do your best to hear the other person’s point of view as well.

Find a way to shift your mind and heart just a little more.

Avoid accusations, name calling, impatience, bullying, blame, and all “low road” approaches.

Brainstorm win-win solutions together.

Be willing to empathize and compromise.

Speak from a place of love and strength.

If you find yourself at an impasse, give yourself space. When the timing is right, you’ll know what to do.

Be at peace. You tried your best to communicate with truth, clarity, strength and love, and that’s all you can do is do your best, right?

Give yourself credit for trying to balance listening from your heart with speaking your truth. It’s a delicate dance, I know. I find that adding LOVE to the formula of speaking my truth with clarity and strength is a magic potion with magical results.

I might be feeling angry, but if I can find a way to use my anger energy as strength and also speak from a place of love and caring, it can have magical results.

Speaking from truth, clarity, strength and love can avoid confrontation and enhance cooperation, collaboration, empathy, compassion, and respect.

Come to think of it, “I speak my truth with clarity, strength AND love” can be a magic formula for peaceful conflict resolution, peace on earth, and peace within, too.

Until the next time, remember to take care of yourself. You are precious, you are the essence of love, and you are loved.

Was it Something More?

Was it Something More?

As you read my autobiographical stories, think about your own life. Was every situation and its outcome a result of pure coincidence, or was it something more?

I was driving on the highway. Suddenly, my car hit an oil slick. After spinning around for several minutes, the car stopped, and my door opened.

It was a busy highway. Why didn’t my car crash into other drivers? Why didn’t it catapult over the ravine? Should I interpret my glorious outcome as pure luck, or should I interpret it as something more?

I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but when I met “him,” something inside me said “he’s the one.” I just knew.

How did I “know?” Where does this intuitive sense come from?

In 1995, two American terrorists bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Shortly after this tragedy, I received a call. Dr. Leslie, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, wanted to bring seeds of healing to her grieving community and asked if I would be willing to perform a concert of hope.

Because I sensed that the request was directed by a whisper from the universe, I agreed to come right away.

It was held in an outdoor amphitheater; I was nervous, and my own heart was breaking. As I waited for the sound engineer to give me the nod to perform, a miracle occurred.

A beautiful butterfly flew on my microphone, lingered there, fluttered around my body, and then landed on my left shoulder. It felt as if the universe had just sent me a gift earmarked, “Special Delivery.” I knew that the butterfly was meant just for me. I also knew that it was sent as a mystical whisper of encouragement.

As I sang my “One Planet” song with the audience, I heard a strong inner voice say, “Don’t leave these beautiful people isolated in their grief. Find a way to connect them.”

Unexpectedly, a new idea flashed through my mind. I asked the audience to step off the bleachers to meet each other. Much to my amazement, they listened. As I looked out, I saw them hugging, shaking hands, crying, singing and introducing themselves to each other. In one magical moment of healing, we embodied one community of love, peace, unity and hope.

It was a life-changing moment. By following the heart of my inner voice, I suddenly understood my life purpose and the common thread of everything I do and everything I am.

Where does this Greater Energy come from? Where does our inner voice, intuition and highest wisdom come from? Is it contrived by the human mind, or is it real and unexplainable?

What about your life?

Have you ever experienced unexpected situations and magical outcomes? Think back. Can all your experiences be explained purely from a scientific and logical point of view, or is it possible that something more mystical was happening? Write your stories down. Although stories like mine can be interpreted as coincidence, what if they were propelled by something more?

Take a Leap of Faith and Say YES to the Universe!

Melody on the beachIs every shift in your life’s direction explainable?

Are you a realist? Do you explain life and all its unexpected changes from the perspective of coincidence? Are you more ethereal? Do you think that life’s twists and turns are caused by something mystical and unexplainable? Because there is no real proof either way, you may find yourself vacillating between realism and mysticism.

Even though the following stories are hypothetical, they could happen. Each scene conveys life’s unexpected and unexplainable surprises…

You’re retired. A catalogue comes to your home with a selection of adult education classes, and you decide to register for a poetry workshop. Even though you’ve never written a poem before, what do you have to lose? Lo and behold, they flow through you with incredible ease, and one year later, you decide to publish them. Someone finds your book on Amazon, and he gives it to Oprah as a gift. She wants to promote it! Change of plans?

Despite strained finances, your parents do whatever it takes to send you to law school. They know that you are worth the sacrifice. You are grateful for their support, but their beautiful sacrifice has a downside. Their elevated expectations keep you from telling them about your other passion. When you’re not studying, you’re in a popular college band as the lead singer, and in your heart, you really want to sing for a living. One night you’re rehearsing with your band. A prominent agent in the music industry walks into the room. He hears you sing, and he wants you to consider an idea right away. Change of plans?

If we like to think that we can control every aspect of our lives, it may feel confusing to have our “definite” plans change. Is every shift in our life’s direction explainable, or is there a mystical energy guiding us every step of the way?

Even though I wrestle with more open-ended questions than definitive answers, I lean towards the idea of a magical and mysterious energy at play. I don’t question the wisdom-whispers that dance in my heart. If I sense that the whisper is coming from my highest intuition, I listen. Wherever the whisper leads, I follow.

*If I am insecure, fearful and insufficiently knowledgeable, when I hear a whisper that aligns with my core values, I vibrate a resounding YES!

*If I have an intuitive feeling that the knock on my door of dreams is a mystical push toward my next steps in life, I say YES!

*If I sense that my dream will uplift the human spirit, I say YES!

*If I sense that it will expand me as a human being, I say YES!

*If I feel that my new vision will stimulate and expand my passion and creative energy, I say YES!

YES affirms that you are open and willing to step towards the unknown.

YES is a nod of agreement to the Universe.

YES propels us towards the passion of our visions and dreams.

How to Believe in a World of Loving Consciousness Even in Difficult Times

peace-dreamer

The desire to be a spiritual catalyst for love and peace is not for the faint-hearted. It takes unwavering focus, self-belief, faith, trust, persistence and courage. There are moments when my heart breaks as I witness a world heavy with the negative energy of violence, discrimination, political polarization, complicit silence, inhumanity, inequality, and a general lack of human decency.

I find myself thinking, “Wait a minute. Loving consciousness? Peace? I wonder if peace is even possible.” If you have moments of doubt, please know in your heart that even optimists, idealists and changemakers become discouraged. It’s normal. We’re human.

Acknowledge your feelings, shake them off, take long, slow and deep breaths, order the voice of self-doubt to fly far away, and give yourself an inspirational pep talk. Continue to work tirelessly towards a world in which we can all be proud. Never give up. Stay the course. Focus on core values that elevate and uplift the human soul and embody the essence of love.

When I think of all the millions of people around the globe who believe in peace, diversity celebration and love, I am inspired beyond all adequate words. They are ordinary people who are also extraordinary. They embody what it means to be a peace dreamer, and most of all, they remind me that I am not alone in my own dream for a world of peace.

Think of all the peace dreamers in history who have inspired you with their courage, vision and actions. Think of all the peace dreamers who are actively working towards a humanity of loving consciousness.

Who are your mentors and role models? Breathe in their energy, passion, hope, determined actions and courage and let them inspire you.

Let’s celebrate the diversity of all our global citizens and see everyone through the heart of love. Commit to spreading love wherever you go, and until the last breath, become unstoppable towards this quest.

Join me in being the love, compassion and kindness our one humanity needs. Join me in being a light that shines towards peace. Never give up on our collective dream. Step by step, resolve to do the inner work needed to heal yourself, and breath by breath, visualize a world of loving consciousness that stands tall for peace.

Quiet Action Steps in Turbulent Times

ocean sunset

First, the pandemic. Now, the war in Ukraine. As we go about our day, the undercurrent of feelings within us might be a combination of heartbreak, exhaustion, confusion, horror, fear, anger, joy, wonder, curiosity, trust, faith, empowerment, strength and courage. Each feeling dovetails or collides. If we allow the negative feelings dominate our days and nights, the ability to find and feel the simple joys in life disappears, wellness dwindles, and hope evaporates.

Here are six quiet actions steps that invite moments of inner peace and hope even during turbulent times. Especially then.

  • Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Using the 4-7-8 method, inhale slowly for 4; Hold your breath for 7; exhale for 8.
  • Add two power words. While implementing the 4-7-8 technique, think two power words. For example: As you inhale for the count of 4 and hold for the count of 7, think the word, “world” and as you exhale for the count of 8, think the word, “peace.” As you think these two power words, visualize “world peace.” What could it look like? Feel like? Sound like? What other positive power words can you think of as you breathe?
  • Thought Transference. Call upon the gift of “thought transference.” This method requires your unbridled imagination. Visualize peace, love and hope for yourself, for others, and for our world. Focus your spiritual lens on anyone who is enduring suffering and linger there. Send concentrated healing prayers of strength, healing and love.
  • Quiet Action Step Video I. Watch this meaningful video and say this prayer and pledge along with me: “The Peace Begins with Me Prayer.” Here is the link: https://vimeo.com/684987069
  • Quiet Action Step Video II. Watch “The Metta Meditation of Loving Kindness” video and say this prayer along with me. In this heart-centered video, I ring my chakra crystal healing bowl as well as my Tibetan bowl and guide you into a 2500-year-old powerful prayer of peace, love, kindness and hope. Here is the link: https://vimeo.com/685024925
  • Keep hope alive. I leave you with a final action step. Absorb all the hope within the poem, “My Dream for Peace” and join me in imagining that those who have the power to destroy the world suddenly feel a transformational shift in their hearts to save the world. If you enjoy creative and spiritual activities, use my poem as a catalyst for expressing you own “dream for peace.”

Trust: A Day will come when we see each other through the warm eyes of love.

Follow Your Heart

Heart Dreamer

I have a magic formula for living my one life. I listen to my heart. I also listen to my highest wisdom, third eye intuition, gut feelings, inner voice, cognitive thoughts, and precious wisdom whispers. Each component is a life compass wrapped into one holistic package. The heart and its other compatible friends guide our relationships, major and minor life decisions, and big and small dreams.

We can know everything without knowing anything for sure. Sometimes I wonder …  “Should I always listen to my heart? What if it’s wrong? Am I fooling myself? Am I simply having delusions of grandeur?” The truth is that we don’t always know any definite answers - and that’s okay. We can know everything without knowing anything for sure. Trust, listen to the wisdom whispers of your soul’s longings, keep your beautiful heart open, ask the universe for guidance, take risks, walk the light of your new dreams, visualize a positive outcome, and notice how each action step feels deep within the truth of your spirit.

The positive energy of fear. Does fear ever stop me from moving ahead with one of my dreams? It depends. There are times when I do listen to my fears. They could be protecting me and saying that something isn’t quite right. There are also times when fear makes me even more determined to follow my heart’s dreams – especially if there are naysayers admonishing me of a “bad outcome.” Anger, fear, confusion, curiosity, trust, faith, intuition, self-respect, determination, self-love, persistence and strength work with each other. You will soon know the path to follow. Trust.

Inner questioning. Create the inner spaciousness to look within. If you sense that your fears are resistant excuses preventing you from living your full potential, breathe in a leap of faith and move forward. Follow your heart because you are scared.

Fear can be a positive energy force that can lead you to expansive growth and unlimited opportunities. Remember. There are no wrong turns. Only different life lessons.

Follow Your Heart. As you read the following poem, contemplate the introspective questions within it. What do you want? What gives you bliss and purpose? Let this poem be your guide towards ecstatic self-discovery, new-found joy and unconditional love. Happy Valentine’s Day! How does Sildenafil Citrate work

follow-your-heart

Follow Your Heart

It’s a simple song of living and I know just what to do.
Follow your heart. Let it lead you.
Let your heart be your guide every single day
Let it shine a light all along your way.

Follow your bliss. Follow the light.
What do you want? It will be all right.
Look for the warmth that you feel inside,
Follow your heart with your arms open wide.

What is your purpose? What feels so good?
Don’t live your life with wish and should.
Follow the path that’s unique to you.
Follow your heart in what you feel and do.

It’s a simple song of living and I know just what to do.
Follow your heart. Let it lead you.
Let your heart be your guide every single day
Let it shine a light all along your way.

Gratitude in Bad Times and Good

A Spiritual Viewpoint

Cheryl Melody Baskin

Gratitude is a sacred word. One problem. What if you aren’t feeling genuinely grateful at this moment? Does this make you a “bad person?” Heavens, no! We’re all perfectly imperfect human beings and life’s challenges can often bring us to our knees. While I admit it’s a stretch to be thankful for the pandemic, lives lost, illnesses, dissention among people, acts of violence, lost jobs, extreme climate changes, money struggles, injustices, and unresolved relationship issues, I know from my own life that it is still possible to successfully bring a glimmer of light to a heavy heart - even during the darkest times.

The 6 H’s will guide your life with gentle spiritual directions for reviving internal gratefulness – no matter what is going on in your life. My hope is that these six seeds will lead you to feelings of authentic thankfulness - especially when you feel most resistant ...

The 6 H’s of Gratefulness:

  • Hope
  • Healing
  • Heart
  • Heaven on Earth
  • Humility
  • Happiness

Hope. Hopelessness is the worst disease of all. Despite everything, exercise your hope muscle. Live in the “you never know.” You never know what GOOD can happen when you least expect it. Remember that “worry is a negative prayer.” Something magical may happen when you least expect it.

Healing. Do the inner work to heal yourself from inside out. Heal your spirit, shift your negative thoughts to positive affirmations, visualize the healing of your body, and while you’re at it, visualize healing for our world, too.

Heart. Keep your heart soft and open it to yourself and to others. Shoo away your inner critic and simply LOVE. Love the shadow and the light within you and treat yourself as your own best friend. Love others, too - even those with whom you don’t agree. Remember that everyone has a story and was born pure and innocent. You were born pure and innocent, too. Love that inner child as if your life depends on it. Because it does.

Heaven on Earth. Breathe in the healing force of nature. In brief moments – even during the darkest times – we can breathe in nature’s medicine and find heaven here on earth. Nothing shifts our body, mind and spirit more quickly than our awe and reverence for the majesty and miracles of nature.

Humility. Even when life is a struggle, find a way to be humble enough to be grateful for what you DO have. It’s as simple as being grateful for each inhaled breath and each exhaled breath. It’s as magical as getting out of our own way long enough to be thankful for every loving act of kindness received and every act of kindness we can gracefully give to others.

When we are struggling with challenges, we often ask, “Why me?” Many of us have asked the universe this question and it’s normal to feel this way. It also takes a certain kind of humility to remain the curious witness and student of life. Instead of “why me,” what if we asked, “What will I learn from this experience? How will I expand as a human being?

Happiness. Happiness is an inside-out job. It requires releasing the words “If only … then.” If only I had money, then I’d be happy. If only I were healthy, then I’d be happy. If only I found the right partner, then I’d be happy. If only I were rich and famous, then I’d be happy.” Happiness begins with inner peace, self-acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, empathy, love and letting go.

Happiness begins with finding something – anything – to be grateful for.

The time is now. Create a grateful list especially when you don’t feel like it. Begin your sentence with “I am grateful for” and add to your list as you go through your day. This simple action plan will shift your mood and mindset in minutes. Keep hope, be vigilant about healing your body, mind and spirit, soften and open your heart, show courageous vulnerability, honor our earth’s abundance, and most of all, take moments during your day to invite gratitude into your life. It will shift your perspective in a New York minute.

What in the World is Going On NOW?!

What in the World is Going On NOW?!

A Spiritual Viewpoint

Have you ever experienced amazingly good things and shockingly bad things within hours or days? On Monday, you receive fantastic news and feel ecstatic. “Pinch me,” you think, “is this really happening? Finally!” You are sure that the universe is working with you and life will be good from now on. A short time later, you receive bad news. Suddenly, it feels like there is an ugly energy ganging up on you. “Wow, Universe! I couldn’t even feel great for more than a few hours?! Give me a break! What in the world is going on NOW?!”

Objective witnessing, opening your heart, spirituality and trust - what they all have in common. As an intuitive empath, I live with different emotions in parallel with each other. I am highly sensitive to all the vibrations swirling within me, in others and in the world. At the same time, I imagine my alter ego flying high above me witnessing every drama. By doing this, it allows me to remain mentally objective and spiritually available to intuit the lessons and deeper meaning of the ebb and flow of my life. Am I always successful? No. But it is in my consciousness to trust that there is a higher reason for everything that happens. Above all, as I observe and feel all the highs and lows of my life, I continue to believe in the healing power of love, trust and faith to get me through every situation. Here’s what also works for me and maybe it will work for you, too.

Personal growth tools in bad times …

Feel all your feelings. Don’t stuff them.
Journal write to get rid of the toxicity in your cells.
Breathe in the healing power of nature.
Make an ‘I am Grateful’ list.
Reach out to an empathic and compassionate person who offers a listening heart.
Help someone who is dealing with a bigger problem.
Eat comfort food, nap, create, keep your feet moving, and listen to soothing music.
Escape by enjoying a “carry me away” book or movie
Personal growth tools in good times …
Celebrate and mark this happy moment in a small or big way.
Squeal with the excitement of your inner child. Jump for joy. Do a happy dance.
Journal write to remember that life can be as wonderful as it can be challenging.
Enjoy a light-hearted walk.
Make an ‘I am Grateful’ list.
Delight in a favorite culinary treat.
Stand in your light and share your good news with others.
Spread your positive twinkle everywhere you go and encourage others to go for their dreams, too.

P.S. We often dismiss the good times and focus more intensely on the bad. Make sure you are just as intense about the GOOD times! Which “Card” will you draw upon to get you through the bad and good times?

No matter what happens to you, someone else, or to the world, take out your Curious Card. Allow childlike curiosity to dominate. Ask your highest wisdom, “What can I learn from this experience?”

Take out your Love Card. Don’t wear anything that happens to you as a badge. The bad or the good. You are so much more than what happens. Your past doesn’t define you. Your present doesn’t define you. None of it defines the glory of who you really are. Keep inhaling and exhaling love and you can’t go wrong. Stay in love with life, the goodness in other people, the healing power of nature, and stay in love with the goodness of who you really are. Even if you’ve been hurt, work on opening your heart to giving and receiving love. And for dessert? Take out your Compassion, Kindness and Empathy cards, too.

Take out your “I Am Empowered” card. Even if you dislike conflict, if something feels wrong, empower yourself with information, tune into your intuition, open your heart, and take positive and healthy action. Advocate for yourself, for someone else, or for any issue that concerns the body, mind, spirit, human rights, the environment, fairness and justice. Sometimes just courageously and lovingly standing up for what you believe is a path towards emotional well-being and positive inner growth.

As “they” say, it’s not what happens to us. It’s our reaction to what happens. Witness every event in your life spiritually and dance towards each event with grace. Most of all, remember the wonderful saying by GK Chesterton to get you from the darkness into light: “Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.”

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall --

Dreamer BooksLearning to Be Your Own Best Friend in Both Bad Times and Good.

There are days when I am a combination of both positive and negative thinking. I am a smattering of pessimistic Eeyore from the book, Winnie-the-Pooh, and a smattering of the more optimistic Tigger, Winnie-the-Pooh, Owl, Christopher Robin, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, and Piglet. Because personality traits, chaotic inner voices and varied feelings often collide with each other, it is normal to vacillate between both optimism and pessimism. That said, it is still important to be mindful of the quality of every thought …

Weeds or sunflowers? When your mind is filled with negative voices that aren’t serving your body, mind or spirit, it is important to ask, “Is this thought a weed that needs to be discarded, released and pulled out from its root, or is it a sunflower gradually unfolding into its full potential?” If we are mostly critical, snarly, and “glass half empty” thinkers, it would be beneficial to shift our disgruntled attitude as quickly as possible. After all, too many weeds in our garden of life will keep the sunlight from shining and our life from blossoming to its full potential.

Mirror, mirror on the wall. When we shift our negative thinking to thoughts that are positive, empathic and loving, a positive energy field transcends insecurities and fears and acknowledges the best of who we are. Now and then, look at yourself in the mirror with warm and loving eyes. One caveat. Our inner critique often takes over and enjoys pointing out what we think are flaws. When you catch yourself looking at your features with dismay, age spots with a frown and wrinkles with a disgusted shaking of your head, stop. Instead of listening to self-demeaning put-downs, how about saying …

“You know what? I love you, flaws and all. I know you try your best, and as Maya Angelou said, “when you know better, you do better.” What strength! What courage! What resilience! Look at all the tremendous challenges you experienced in your life. You never gave up. You never give up. I’m so proud of you. Hi, my friend. My best friend. Let’s do something positive together. Let’s see. What gives you joy? Laughter? Relaxation? Peace? Whatever you need to heal your spirit, let’s do it.”

The best life coach is free. When my inner critic is the only voice I hear in my head, I know it’s time for a megadose of self-love. Instead of being my own worst enemy, I shift to being my own best friend. While addressing my alter ego, I assume two roles. I am the person who has a problem, and I am also the person who has the power to be her own inner guru, life coach and best friend. I say to my best friend (me to me) …

I know you’re going through a difficult challenge and you’re not sure how to handle it. Let me ask you a question. If a friend had to face a challenge like yours, what would you say or do to help?

I don’t know why, but it’s always so much easier to suggest just the right remedy to a friend. After you hear the wisdom that you gave “your best friend,” offer yourself the same advice. One

of the pearls of wisdom I told “my best friend” focused on the healing power of words. I inspired her to say …

“I can handle this situation. Step by step and breath by breath, I have the strength to deal with anything that comes my way. I’ve proven my inner strength before, and I will prove it again. I can do this!”

Spiritual awakening. So, are you ready? Say hello to your beautiful essence. Your best friend. Cherish, respect and honor yourself. Offer yourself the same spiritual wisdom, guidance, compassion, forgiveness, kindness and love you offer others. Acknowledge your strength and beauty. It isn’t boastful. It isn’t narcissistic. It is loving, compassionate, caring, supportive, forgiving and healing. Don’t allow the naysayers and pessimists of the world to sway you from a life of joy and empowerment and don’t allow your own inner naysayer sway you from a life of joy and empowerment. Make it your intention to be kinder to yourself in both bad times and good. As the lyrics of my original song, “The Friendship Song,” says …

Be your own best friend in “The Friendship Song,”

Sing it out loud and sing it strong

Shake your own hand, say hello

Smile at yourself each day you grow!
