After COVID-19. Then What?

peace-dreamer

New attitudes and tools for dealing with uncertainty, impatience and a new normal

The ramifications of COVID-19 continue to be challenging even to the most flexible and patient among us. For those who believe that COVID-19 has never been “a hoax,” we wake up in the morning thinking, “Is COVID-19 finally over? Almost over? Could be over? Will be over? What is the CDC saying and not saying? What does anyone know for sure? What’s safe? Not safe? Can I travel? Can I believe in the vaccines, or are we just one big experiment? What do I believe? Not believe?

If you have thoughts like these, you are in good company. Uncertainty breeds unbridled anxiety. Impatience breeds impulsive decision-making. As an imperfectly perfect human being, intuitive life coach, author of four self-help books, and a “peace begins with me” educator, here are the user-friendly grounding tools I use to help me stay sane and centered - even when life is still feeling messy.

Breathe. Breathe for yourself and breathe for the healing of all humanity. When life still feels out of control and uncertain, (P.S. “When doesn’t it?”), return to basic tools for getting a grip again. Stop the world, place your feet firmly on the ground, uncross your arms, return to the

present moment, put your hand on your heart, and breathe long, slow and deep breaths. Even one minute of stopping the world and mindfully breathing will make a difference.

The subtle space between each breath. Consciously become aware of the space between each inhale and exhale. With each new breath, focus on unclenching your jaw and teeth, relaxing your neck and shoulders, unfurling your eyebrows, and releasing negative thoughts. With every inhale, think the words, “deep peace, let go and trust.” With every exhale, think the words, “deep peace, let go and trust.”

If you want to change your life, change your words. When my husband suffered a heart attack several years ago, we designed a positive affirmation together. I have the strength and the will to get through this. During COVID-19, we turned to this affirmation again. Power words convey to our subconscious and conscious mind that we can get through anything and everything. We can reduce our worries and fears by what we tell ourselves. Write your power words down, say them aloud, sing them, visualize your life as if your new mantra is already true, and most of all, believe these new messages. And remember … practice makes perfect.

The healing vibration of thought transference. Without getting too “woo woo” about this concept, I am a grounded advocate for the healing power of thought transference. When we activate the power of the mind and heart, vibrations of healing, strength and love are sent telepathically to those in emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual stress. The prayer I say every morning and every evening is “The Metta Meditation Prayer of Loving-Kindness:”

May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and at ease.

May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be peaceful and at ease.

May we be happy. May we be well. May we be safe. May we be peaceful and at ease.

What did I learn about myself during COVID-19? What is the take-away? I am the founder and moderator of a large Facebook community called, “Shift of Heart,” and when I asked this question to the members, M.J. wrote: “Perhaps one of the biggest gifts of the pandemic has been the fact that my life has slowed down and I take time for the small things ... savor the taste, consider the words, enjoy the aroma, reflect on the beauty, live with intention. After receiving both vaccines, I feel the rhythm of life slowly beginning to increase. It’s worth reminding myself of the beautify of stillness.”

Journaling. Think about your life during COVID-19. What did you learn? What did you learn about yourself that you didn’t know before the pandemic? What new awareness and qualities do you want to carry into the “new normal?” What new attitudes and actions? Write down your thoughts and feelings and release anything that has been stirring inside you. As you think about the past year, begin to form positive visions for yourself and your life.

After the pandemic. Despite the urge to charge into the world full steam ahead, try to keep life even more simple than it was before the pandemic. Discern when to say no, and when to say yes; whom you want to be with, and whom you don’t; what errands are necessary, and when you need time-out for simply “being,” rather than doing. You’ve been through so much trauma. Give yourself compassion and love. Offer others these qualities, too. Falsified medications flood North American and European markets

We have been through the unimaginable, and it’s still not over. Use healing tools that can help you regain certainty in a world of uncertainty and patience when you want to burst out into the world with no filter. Above all, keep faith and remember that we can only control what we can control. Stay the course and keep your heart open and your eyes up towards the light of hope. It is never too late to notice the silver lining from difficult experiences. It is never too late to step into a new purpose, mission and dream for yourself and for the world. Little by little, we will get there.

Shift of Heart - Paths to Healing and Love during Troubled Times

Placid LakeWe are living through painstaking life challenges. We are also experiencing the possibility of shifting permanently towards personal and planetary healing and love. Each day, we learn the deeper meaning of the words, “unconditional love, trust, activism, truth, prayer, possibility, faith, forgiveness, respect, inclusion, empathy and compassion.” As we continue to live with the impact of COVID-19, the brutal murder of George Floyd and all those who came before him, poverty, racism, white privilege, Reverend Sharpton’s powerful message, “get your knee off our necks,” Black Lives Matter and multicultural peace protests, rubber bullets, tear gassing, looting, police officers on bended knee along with protestors, police brutality, and then the action of Mayor Bowser courageously painting BLACK LIVES MATTER on 16th Street NW … we remain steadfast in the possibility towards lasting positive change. As I write down each of these intense moments, I am overwhelmed with the ebb and flow of my own emotions and perhaps you feel overwhelmed, too. It’s to be expected. We are coming face to face with the good, bad and ugly within ourselves and with each other.

Because I have had the vision towards one community of love and peace my entire life, I continue to believe in the power of people to shift, grow and change, no matter how they conducted their lives moments before. We are living through a collective turning point that will serve as a compass for the trajectory of all our lives, and it is a moment in which we can taste positive change in the air. It is also a time that feels overwhelming. As an intuitive life coach, there are inner growth tools that may help you navigate your minute-by-minute changeable emotions while remaining solidly grounded, balanced and emotionally elastic. As we continue this journey of truth, change and hope…

Breathe and remain grounded. George Floyd was not allowed to breathe. His cry out loud to breathe is a call to our souls of the importance of this basic need. When we ourselves are anxious, our breath becomes shallow and we lose connection to our body. To maintain your chi or energy, it is vital to remain grounded and mindful of your breath. As you go through your day, consciously place both feet solidly on the ground and sense the energy of the earth supporting you. Feel the energy moving from the bottoms of your feet all the way up towards the crown of your head. Then, either standing or sitting, close your eyes and with your feet firmly planted on ground, inhale and exhale slowly. As you inhale and exhale, feel yourself inside every moment of every breath, and notice the space between each breath. As you become aware of each space between breaths, mindfully relax your body even more. Unclench your jaw and teeth, relax your neck and shoulders, unfurl your eyebrows, and continue to breathe. Breathe for yourself, breathe for all those who can no longer breathe, and breathe for the healing of our planet. Be present in this moment. Here. Now. This. Most of all, breathe in renewed energy, hope and miracles.

The healing power of words. Words matter and contain a palatable energy. As an author and songwriter, I am conscious of the power of each word that we think, sing, say, write and feel. In my daily life, I create and use positive affirmations to help me offset the unhelpful voices in my head. Here are examples of positive affirmations that are written in the present tense, as if they are already true and happening now.

“I have the will and the strength to get through this.”

“Love is my only path.”

“I have the power to change.”

“I am courageous, determined and strong.”

“I speak my truth with clarity, strength and love.”

“I heal myself and send healing to others.”

“I am my breath. I am love. I am enough. I am”

Visualization. This “healing from inside-out” approach works on your subconscious mind. Do you remember your ability to pretend, dream and imagine when you were younger? Return to the dreamer inside you now. Visualize healing, mutual understanding, peaceful conflict-resolution and possibility. What does it look like? What words do you hear and what actions do you see? Imagine possibility and feel it pumping through every one of your cells. Dream new dreams for yourself. Dream new dreams for all humankind.

With every thought, feeling and interaction, visualize a new world of love, peace and hope.

The healing medicine of nature. Uplift your spirit by taking slow sensory walks. Hear the birds, stand still and fall in love with a beautiful flower, hear the ocean waves in your mind’s eye or in real time, and look up at the unlimited expanse of the sky. Looking up at the sky will help you straighten your posture and pump the spirit of dreams and hope into your body, mind and spirit.

Humanity 101 List. We have many activities on our to-do list, but how about taking time to create a Humanity 101 list that returns us back to the basics of what it means to step into the highest version of ourselves? This list tap

s into the softer and more meaningful side of life. As you form your own list, here are a few ideas to inspire you ….

Love. Remember that all paths can lead to love.

Reach out. Become a beacon of light, inspiration and hope.

Give. Give without any expectations.

Good vibes. Aim for optimism. Wherever you go, spread the power of love.

Feel. Keep your heart open.

Backbone. Stand in your truth. Speak up. Give yourself an empowered voice.

Help. Do whatever you can to make this world a better place.

People. Listen, uplift and inspire.

Forgive. Open your heart to the healing that forgiveness can bring.

Awaken. Stay awake, aware, conscious and fully present.

Open. Give people a chance. Learn from people who are different from you.

Visualize. Picture your life as you would like it to be and picture the world as you would like it to be. Believe.

It may feel as if we are living through the story of Job from the Old Testament of the Bible. Our sorrow, exhaustion and fear may torment us day and night. Throughout it all, stand tall in your resilience, determination, survival instincts, strength and courage, and know that life’s challenges are not only a test of fortitude, but can help us grow and change for the better. Use inner growth tools to help you maintain a sense of grounded energy while going through the emotions of darkness and light. While becoming an inspirational change-maker and light-worker, continue to work on healing yourself. Above all, never give up. Breath by breath, each of us makes a difference and we have the power to create a world that offers one heart of unconditional love.

In every moment, stand for love, be love and shine love.

Wisdom from a “Heart-Dreamer”
A Free Vacation

(For this experiential activity, choose a favorite photo of yourself).

Melody on the beachOkay, I admit it. If you saw me right now, you wouldn’t recognize the person you see in this photograph. Although it was a great trip to Hawaii, I’m back home and reality has set it. It’s dawn, the weather report calls for a wintry mix, I haven't brushed my teeth yet, my face looks like I would scare my cat if I had one, I’m sleep deprived, and my inner thoughts are filled with unhelpful worries, fears, doubts and a busy to-do list. I know I could superficially function today, but who wants to just “function?” What about those feelings I experienced in Hawaii of aliveness and joy? How do I recapture them and snap out of this emotional paralysis?

As I contemplate my questions in silence, I hear an inner voice whispering, “trust.” Trust that the person in the photograph is still somewhere in your spirit and make an executive decision to invite her into your life as a mentor of inspiration today. I sit quietly listening for more inner guidance, and just when I give up, I hear her say, “Paradise is not situated in one specific place.”

What is she talking about?

My alter ego urges me to take another look at the photo, and when I observe it again, I can’t figure out what it shows me besides my curly frizzy hair. She gently encourages me to look at it again. She asks, “What qualities do you vibrate in this picture, and how can you invite these qualities back into your life?”

As I look at the stranger in the photo that is me, I can sense her exciting energy of unbridled freedom, joy, truth, happiness, creativity, playfulness, curiosity, empowerment and delight. I also see this fun-loving woman stretching her arms out wide to the universe while confidently shouting, "Ta-Daa! Here I am world. I'm imperfectly-perfect and enough just as I am today!"

Suddenly, I understand. I am homesick for that stranger, and I need to rediscover her without going on a vacation.

This exercise is delicious in its teachings, and I invite you to join me now. Select a favorite photo of yourself. Even if you dislike all your pictures, there must be one that stands out and brings a smile to your face. Is there a snapshot that captures a moment of innocence and joy? Is there a photo that represents a moment when you were able to say a temporary goodbye to doubt, self-criticism, fear, sadness, insecurity, anger and frustration?

Observe your true essence in this picture. What are the qualities that attract you about this person, and how can you invite these positive qualities back into your life? For example, does this person radiate playfulness? Do you wish you could feel more playful now? If so, dub “playful” as your mantra and imagine yourself like this. What do you look like? Sound like? See your playful gestures, hear your vibrant tone of voice, notice how light and silly you are, hear your laughter and see the twinkle in your eyes. Wherever you go, invite “playfulness” into your life. Walk with a more confident and upbeat posture, look up at the sky and breathe in a renewed breath of lightness and hope, and choose people in your life that can be playful, too. Instead of filling your day with self-criticism and heaviness, give yourself more love and moments of delight. Think in your mind, “playfulness, playfulness.” Create a positive affirmation … “I am light and playful.” Write the word, “playful” on sticky notes and place them everywhere.

Most of all, if you find yourself taking every aspect of life too seriously, do what the angels do. Remember? “Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly.” (quotation by G.K. Chesterton)

If you find yourself experiencing a merry-go-round of bad days, stop the cycle before you dive more deeply into the rabbit hole. You have the power to shift. If I can do it, so can you. If you want to create a different energy for living your minutes on earth, step into the highest version of yourself. Open your heart a little more, smile at a stranger, give without expectation, laugh frequently, and welcome the day from the stance of an imaginative dreamer, lover of life, and as a person who has the resilience and determination to remain in a place of hope, love, possibility and courage, no matter what!

As my self-help book, “Heart-Dreamer-Stepping into Life, Love, Creativity and Dreams No Matter What, says …

“Paint your life with the colors of love, courage, risk, faith, self-belief, joy, trust, strength, sparkle, excitement, glow, magic and optimism. Paradise isn't something that you have to save up for and go to, and it doesn't require a hotel room, transportation and money. Paradise can be embraced into your being right where you are.”

Time Flies

breath

I missed the power of NOW too often this summer. Can you believe it's September already! For me, the summer zoomed. Did I notice enough moments? Was my mind filled with to do's, worries, anxieties, fears, and not enough balance in my life? Was I thinking about the future too much, or what I can't seem to resolve from situations of the past?

How many moments of NOW did I miss? Breaths I didn't breathe in slowly or deeply enough, the shapes of clouds in the sky I missed, birds I didn't hear?

This is not to shame me into yet another thing to feel guilty about, but it is here pouring out of my heart to yours this morning to encourage all of us to notice more moments today. This. Now this. Here. Now. Experiment today. Do your regular life-thing, but have the consciousness to stop to suddenly notice you, beautiful you, here now.

Feel your now.

Today. Take moments that are only for precious YOU. Any amount is more than you had before. Breathe in slowly and deeply, allowing more healthy air into your being, and as you breathe in and out, I invite you to breathe in love, pure unconditional love for beautiful you that tries so hard, that is courageous and strong and has gone through so much. Know that under the muck of your thoughts and the heavier parts of your life is pure love.

Love you now. In an appreciative, respectful and glorious way. How does Sildenafil Citrate work

And then...spread that warm, open, accepting, grateful, tolerant and compassionate feeling to all of humanity.

It’s the Holidays Already?!!

December 1, 2016 By Cheryl Melody Baskin

frustrated and stress for the holidays

It's The Holidays Already?!!

it must be loveYup. It’s here! Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Years! We are scurrying around, making lists, gift buying, making more lists, oops I forgot someone, returning gifts, re-gifting, gritting our teeth and clenching our jaws in traffic, feeling stress, tension, headaches, depression, anxiety, trying to do the “right” things while putting on a plastic smile, and for some of us, feeling a heightened sense of sadness and loneliness in the midst of crowds and colorful, musical, bell-ringing stimulation.

On the other hand, I know that there ARE people that take the holidays in stride, have it all down to a system, and DO feel a sense of joy, love and gratefulness. Many of us, however, absorb this time period as stress-FULL!

Solutions?

I don’t have any. I could say simplify, but that gets complicated. I could say start to plan earlier, but despite our good intentions, the unexpected always seems to happen.  I could say spend less money, but you know how that goes.

I know I am supposed to be the wisdom sharer, but all I can offer is to remind you to breathe and KNOW you are breathing… in…. out… slowly…deeply. Repeat.   Repeat again. Take seconds to regroup, renew, and say hello to precious you! We often forget the simple solutions of finding inner paradise in seconds-even in the midst of chaos (at least that is true for me).

Breathe and remember: What is this Season FOR? Besides all of the usual expectations, this season is also here to remind us to set our intentions to love and heal ourselves and others, to share and care, to increase our compassion, forgiveness and empathy capacity, to love our family- despite dysfunctions, and to remember to fight for our sense of sanity and balance: self-care, self-love. Ahhhh.

It’s also the season to remember to give to others in a NON-materialistic manner—a little smile of “I see you-you are not invisible to me,” a small gesture of renewed kindness, increased manners, and opening our spirit to good will towards all humankind.

It is the season to hold and psychically send out the vision of peace on earth. It’s not the Pollyanna syndrome for us to hold that vision.  We can’t all be like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh: Oh dear, what’s the use? There will always be unrest, prejudice, judgment, bias, bullying and wars. Let’s give up.

Visualize peace along with me: What would it look like, feel like and sound like…if we had more inner peace? Peace within our families? Neighborhoods? …(sigh) Globally?

Imagine peace as if it were true. See the healing and love! Hold that vision! Let’s all become peace warriors in walking the path of love as the ONLY path. THAT’S the holiday spirit. That’s the spirit that we need to create each and every day. When we flub up, we try again. Thank goodness for new moments.

Imagine Peace as if it could be true-because what IF it could be? What if?

Shift of Heart (A Prayer and Poem for Peace) by Cheryl Melody Baskin

Envision with me

A shift of heart in all people who seek revenge.

A shift of heart on each side: In those who hate and in those who are hated.

Imagine with me

A day when those who have the power to destroy the world

Feel a transformational shift in their hearts to SAVE the world!

Search with me

For all people to understand one another, and if we can’t understand one another

May we at least, at the very least, respect one another’s differences

Hope with me

That each one of us finds Inner peace, inner love, inner compassion, inner forgiveness

And because of these qualities felt from within

There will be a shift of heart offered towards one another.

Visualize with me

Sending a glorious beaming light through and around our self, each other and Mother Earth.

Let every living being suddenly feel

Love, Transformation, Celebration, Tolerance and Peace.

And may there be a shift of heart within all people of our small precious world.

Feel Good During Hard Times: 7 Ways to Inner Paradise

Feel Good During Hard Times: 7 Ways to Inner Paradise

sunrise over the oceanChaos is everywhere-internally at times, in personal situations, every day in the news and in our political climate, and of course globally. How do we keep it together-despite chaos, violence all around us, sadness, hurt, utter craziness?

There are ways to find Paradise in a New York Minute!

  1. BREATHING  First, be aware of your breathing. Are you holding your breath or breathing in a shallow way?   Here is an easy tool:   Imagine a square shape, and each side of the square. Consciously and slowly breathe in deeply and count inside yourself: "1-2-3-4"  for one side of the square; go to the next side of the square, and hold your breathe for 4; go to the next side, and breathe out slowly to 4; go to the final side, and hold your breath for 4. Repeat and repeat again- till you feel a sense of more calm and centeredness...until you feel more like the best version of you!
  2. WORDS: REPEATING A "MANTRA"--As you breathe, say two words to yourself: "THIS MOMENT, THIS MOMENT."  This moment is all we know for sure.  Stay in this moment, the present, the here and now..and use your breath and the words to help you BE in this moment, without your mind wondering, worrying, fretting, "awfulizing" and being in a state of anxiety.
  3. VISUALIZE!  While you breathe and say those two words, visualize light, healing, love, kindness, compassion, inner mind and heart expansion and spaciousness, forgiveness, inner peace, courage, strength, caring, gentleness, warmth...in you, around you, for yourself, for those you know, for those you don't know, and even for those you don't like.  Now there's a challenge AND an opportunity for inner growth!
  4. MOVE! Take a slow gentle sensory hear- the- symphony- of- sounds- all -around- you type of walk. It doesn't have to be cardio and hard exercise. If you are disabled, you imagine this walk--and studies show that it is the same as doing it!  It can be a healing and slow walk, noticing...,noticing the colors, sounds, shapes, textures and smells all around you.  Nature can indeed heal us.  See it, be IN it, feel it, imagine it!   Seeing just one flower heals-its colors, shape, beauty...be IN the flower's peace, healing and beauty.
  5. WHERE IS PARADISE WHEN LIFE IS CRAZY? Paradise isn't something that you have to save up for and go to...it doesn't require a hotel room and transportation and money.  Paradise can be embraced into your spirit each moment right where you are.
  6. THE HEALING POWER OF WORDS:  Say healthy words to yourself--your inner talk--Positive self-talk:  Here are some positive affirmation examples:  "Today is a good day."  "All good comes my way today."  "I love myself unconditionally."  "I show my love to someone today." "I create small moments of kindness today."  "I am courageous and strong."  "I focus on the present and release the past." Create your own positive self-talk.  Act "as if."  As if it is true.  Fake it till you make it, "they" say.  It's true! BE it and you will claim your highest self, your star, your highest vibration of love for yourself and others.
  7. MUSIC:  And then there is music! It has saved my life, my soul, my day and my moments so many times:  Put on uplifting music! Conduct to it! Move to it! Sing or hum to it! HUM, WHISTLE, SING, MAKE UP SONGS, SING THE BLUES, SING YOUR JOY AND WHAT CAN BE POSSIBLE!  These sounds create vibrations--vibrations that uplift and increase your energy and moods .  Sound release is one of the only ways to massage yourself from inside-out, AND raise your energetic vibration to a new level! Pretty good medicine sildenafil citrate really cheap without negative side effects!
